A pre-operative RN’s main duty is evaluating the physical and mental health of patients who are coming into the hospital for planned surgery.
These nurses will also be able to check blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, body mass index, and they can do blood tests and EKGs. They are also responsible for patient admission and care before surgery begins. This often includes pre-op education and escort of patient/family members.
A pre-op nurse will often act as a discharge nurse when assigned.
They are required to utilize equipment and supplies effectively and efficiently by overseeing stock and preparation of surgery supplies.
These nurses work hand in hand with surgeons and post-op nurses.
Pre-op nurses can be coincided with PACU or OR specialties as well.
